When Society Says “Don’t”

Kundtz writes this morning, “We live in a world that is not very open or friendly to Stopping. Our society's voices often say, ‘Keep going, don't stop!’” As professionals, many of us fall victim to this mentality, especially during today’s economic crisis and federal government. Even prior to, the demands that come with life, in particular, caring for a family, the needs and wants drive our grinding at work. I know I have been guilty of this most of my career. This past week I confessed my goal to “care less”. I am not going to be careless, but I am working to care less about the demands of people and things beyond me and my family, so that I focus more on truly living (again). Henry David Thoreau is quoted as saying, “We have lived not in proportion to the number of years we have spent on the earth, but in proportion as we have enjoyed." As I reflect over the last year and life overall, I do not want to begin this 48th year of life proportionally but fully. God has restored my joy and I’m responsible for maintaining and fulfilling it.

James 1:2-8 reads, “My brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of any kind, consider it nothing but joy, because you know that the testing of your faith produces endurance; and let endurance have its full effect, so that you may be mature and complete, lacking in nothing.”

Even in difficulties that arise, I will remained focused on the fact and perspective that they, too, will work out for my good.

Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! Therefore the world does not know us, because it did not know Him.

May we remember that we are a gift, and it is truly a gift to be called His children.

No matter the situation, especially those of trial and difficulty, may we alway trust and rely on His word, His way, and His wisdom.
